MadFibers Case Study
About MadFibers
MadFibers
Portugal — Sustainable Packaging
MadFibers manufactures sustainable tableware from sugarcane bagasse, transforming agricultural waste into premium, biodegradable products. Based in Portugal, they serve eco-conscious retailers and food service businesses across the European Union.
Navigating EU Compliance
As the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) took shape, MadFibers needed a way to create Digital Product Passports (DPPs) for their entire product line. The requirements were complex: full lifecycle traceability, circularity metrics, material composition disclosures, and machine-readable data formats.
As a growing SME, MadFibers lacked the in-house resources to build a custom DPP solution, and enterprise platforms were prohibitively expensive and overly complex for their needs.
Sustalium Digital Product Passports
MadFibers chose Sustalium to create comprehensive Digital Product Passports with full traceability and circularity metrics. Using the platform, they were able to:
- Generate EU ESPR-compliant DPPs for each product SKU
- Document full material composition, from sugarcane sourcing to finished product
- Include circularity metrics such as recyclability scores and end-of-life instructions
- Attach QR codes to packaging that link directly to the live DPP
- Provide multi-language support for cross-border EU distribution
Measurable Impact
Within hours of signing up, MadFibers had their first Digital Product Passport live and accessible via QR code. Key results include:
- Setup completed in under 30 minutes for the first product
- Full product lifecycle documented from raw material to disposal
- QR codes printed on packaging link customers directly to live DPP data
- Compliant with upcoming EU ESPR requirements ahead of enforcement deadlines
