Water Footprint Declaration (ISO 14046)

ISO 14046:2014 establishes the principles and requirements for conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-based water footprint studies for products, processes, and organisations. Unlike simple water withdrawal accounting, an ISO 14046-compliant water footprint quantifies not just volume but also the potential environmental impact of that water use — accounting for regional water scarcity and the quality of water returned to the environment. This impact-based approach, rather than volume-only accounting, is what distinguishes ISO 14046 from basic water metering and makes it the appropriate methodology for regulatory and investor-grade disclosures.

The EU CSRD's ESRS E3 standard (Water and Marine Resources) requires reporting companies to disclose water consumption, withdrawal, and discharge by source, segmented by water-stressed areas. The standard explicitly references ISO 14046 as the calculation methodology for product water footprints and requires that water stress context be determined using a recognised water risk atlas — typically WRI Aqueduct or WWAP. Companies subject to CSRD must disclose this data from financial year 2025 onwards (for the largest companies), making data collection and methodology establishment an immediate priority rather than a future exercise.

Beyond regulatory compliance, the CDP Water Security programme — which covers over 5,000 companies — assigns disclosure scores partly on the basis of whether respondents have conducted water footprint assessments aligned to recognised methodologies. Companies without a documented water footprint score lower on CDP and face increasing investor pressure, particularly from major asset managers who have signed the Ceres Investor Water Hub commitments.
