RSPO for Small Brands: Palm Oil Without the Chaos

The email usually arrives from a retail buyer or a hotel group: "Can you confirm your palm oil is RSPO certified?" And the founder, who runs a six-person granola or cosmetics brand, types "RSPO" into a search engine for the first time.

Here's the thing nobody explains clearly: brands don't get "RSPO certified" in the way they get certified for other things. RSPO certifies palm oil production and its supply chain. Your job as a brand is to make claims that follow RSPO's rules — and there are four different ways to do it, with very different price tags.

The four supply chain models

  • Identity Preserved (IP) — your oil is traceable to a single certified plantation. Gold standard, expensive, rare at small volumes.
  • Segregated (SG) — certified oil kept separate from conventional oil through the whole chain. You can claim "contains certified sustainable palm oil."
  • Mass Balance (MB) — certified and conventional oil mixed in the supply chain, tracked administratively. You can claim "contributes to the production of certified sustainable palm oil."
  • Book & Claim (credits) — you buy RSPO Credits through the PalmTrace platform to offset the volume you use, while buying physical oil on the open market. You can make "supports" claims under strict wording.

What a small brand can actually say

Wording matters enormously here, and it's where brands get into trouble with both RSPO and advertising law:

  • Buying MB oil lets you say your product "contributes to" certified sustainable production. This is the most common entry point for small brands because MB oil barely costs more than conventional.
  • Only IP or SG lets you say your product "contains certified sustainable palm oil."
  • Credits let you say your product "supports" certified production — and RSPO requires very specific phrasing on packaging.

Print "100% sustainable palm oil" on a label without the right model behind it and you've not only broken RSPO's trademark rules, you've walked into green claims liability in the EU. We covered the legal side in our guide to the EU Green Claims Directive; the short version is that every environmental claim needs evidence, and RSPO's own rules tell you exactly which evidence buys which wording.

The realistic path for a small brand

  1. Ask your ingredient supplier or co-packer whether they handle RSPO-certified material, and in which model. If they do, your cost increase might be tiny — MB oil trades at a small premium over conventional.
  2. If your co-packer isn't supply-chain certified, either switch to one that is, or buy credits for the volume you use. Credits are the cheapest entry ticket: you pay per tonne of palm oil you use, with no audit, no certification, and a "supports" claim in return.
  3. Get the trademark licence. Using the RSPO trademark on packaging requires a licence and an annual report (ACOP) on volumes. The paperwork is a few hours a year, not a project.

A full supply chain certification audit for a small manufacturer runs in the low four figures per year. That's real money for a micro business, which is exactly why most start with credits or MB and upgrade later.

Where RSPO fits with EUDR

Palm oil is one of the commodities covered by the EU Deforestation Regulation, which we've covered in detail here. RSPO certification is genuinely useful for EUDR preparation — certified suppliers have traceability systems, audits and documentation habits — but it is not a substitute. EUDR wants geolocation of the plantation, legality checks and a due diligence statement, and it doesn't accept a certificate in place of that data.

So treat RSPO as the sustainability layer and EUDR as the legal layer. A brand that has both is ahead of almost everyone in its category; a brand that confuses the two will get an unpleasant letter.

Keep the claim honest and the evidence public

Buyers ask about palm oil because their own sourcing commitments and supermarket policies demand it. The big confectionery companies — Nestlé and Ferrero run RSPO-certified supply chains — pushed the standard into the mainstream years ago, and the request flows downhill until it lands on a small granola brand. When they ask, they want a number and a model, not a story. "We use MB-certified palm oil, 4.2 tonnes in 2025, claim registered with RSPO" closes the question in one line.

Publishing that declaration as a live, dated page — with the model, the volumes and the certificate — is the difference between answering the buyer's questionnaire once and answering it every quarter. There's a structural trick worth knowing too: if your co-packer is connected as a supplier in the same system, a change on their side — new oil, new volumes, new certificate — shows up on your claim page instead of surfacing at an audit. That's what we built Sustalium for: supplier-linked records, one verifiable URL per claim, €10 per document. Your palm oil story is small and simple if the evidence sits in one public place.

How Sustalium Helps with Palm Oil Claims

  • Supplier-linked claims — connect your co-packer and their changes land on your claim page instead of surfacing at an audit.
  • One claim page per product — the model, the volumes and the certificate, verifiable by any retail buyer.
  • Same data, next framework — the sourcing evidence behind your RSPO claim is most of what EUDR due diligence needs.

One Claim, One Link, Every Buyer

Publish your palm oil story with the evidence attached, and update it when your suppliers do. Start your declaration free and publish once your evidence is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim my product "contains certified sustainable palm oil"?

Only with Segregated or Identity Preserved supply chains. Mass Balance supports "contributes to" claims, and RSPO Credits support "supports" claims under strict wording.

Does RSPO certification exempt me from EUDR?

No. RSPO helps with EUDR preparation because certified suppliers have traceability systems, but EUDR requires geolocation, legality checks and a due diligence statement.

What does RSPO cost a small brand?

Credits are the cheapest entry, paid per tonne used. Supply chain certification for a small manufacturer runs in the low four figures per year, plus the trademark licence and annual reporting.
