Affordable EUDR Due Diligence for Small Importers

Small importers can meet EUDR due diligence without an enterprise budget: collect plot geolocations from suppliers, run a documented risk assessment, and submit a due diligence statement. The cost driver is process, not software.

The three EUDR obligations

  1. Geolocation: for cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soya and wood, you need the plot coordinates where the commodity was produced
  2. Risk assessment: evidence that the commodity is deforestation free and legally produced, with supplier documents attached
  3. Due diligence statement: submitted through the EU information system before placing goods on the market

Doing it on a small budget

  • Start with your supplier list: the same declarations feed every shipment, so collect once and refresh on change
  • Template the geolocation request: suppliers respond faster to a short, precise request than to a general email
  • Document every risk decision: what you checked, what you found, and why the risk is negligible or not. Undocumented judgment is the first thing an inspector questions
  • Reuse across orders: one commodity, one supplier, one assessment, refreshed per shipment instead of rebuilt

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my supplier cannot provide geolocations?

Treat it as high risk: either obtain the data through another actor in the chain, or you cannot place the product on the EU market until it is resolved.

Do small operators have an exemption?

There is a simplified regime for SMEs in some cases, but the due diligence statement is still required. Confirm your status against the current delegated acts before relying on it.

What happens if my due diligence statement has errors?

The statement can be corrected, but goods already placed on the market with a false or incomplete statement create enforcement exposure. Validate before shipment.
