A self-assessment is a structured questionnaire or evaluation completed internally to document compliance status, identify gaps, or respond to buyer requirements. Self-assessments capture knowledge directly from the people closest to the data — product managers, compliance officers, procurement teams, and facility managers. Common examples include buyer-supplied compliance surveys covering environmental metrics and material restrictions, internal regulatory readiness assessments, supply chain risk scoring matrices, and self-declaration forms for conformity assessment. Self-assessments are often the starting point for compliance documentation before external testing or certification is obtained.

Self-assessments serve multiple purposes. They are often the fastest way to generate compliance evidence when external data is not yet available — a self-declaration of conformity can support CE marking before lab testing is complete. They capture institutional knowledge that would otherwise be lost when team members leave. They enable rapid response to buyer compliance surveys by providing structured answers that can be reused across multiple customer requests. They also serve as gap analysis tools, identifying where additional evidence, testing, or certification is needed before a formal compliance submission.

Self-declaration is accepted for organic claims in certain jurisdictions, green claims under the EU Green Claims Directive (with supporting evidence), and conflict minerals due diligence under the OECD framework.
